The colour

That depth of colour is the point.

The deep purple is anthocyanin — the same family of antioxidants found in blackberries and blueberries. Queensland breeders spent years selecting for more of it. It is the reason this plum exists.

The whole plum goes in and the whole plum comes out — anthocyanins, fibre and polyphenols in roughly the ratio the fruit grew them.

What is Queen Garnet plum?

Queen Garnet is a Japanese plum cultivar (Prunus salicina) bred in Queensland, Australia by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries through conventional breeding. It was selected over years for unusually high anthocyanin content — the deep purple pigment found in dark fruit — and is not genetically modified.

What are anthocyanins?

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring plant pigments that give blueberries, blackberries and Queen Garnet plums their deep purple-red colour. They belong to the flavonoid group of polyphenols and are the compound class most often examined in the published research on Queen Garnet.

Is Queen Garnet plum genetically modified?

No. Queen Garnet was developed through conventional plant breeding by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries — selecting and crossing existing Japanese plum varieties over successive generations. No genetic modification was involved.
